Mswati III, the King of Swaziland and head of the Swazi Royal Family has picked a 19-year-old girl as his 14th wife.

Buzz SA reports that King Mswati’s new wife, Siphelele Mashwama, is the daughter of Jabulile Mashwama, Cabinet Minister in King Mswati's administration.

Siphelele Mashwama recently graduated from Swaziland’s Waterford Kamhlaba World University College and accompanied her new husband to the United Nations general assembly in the United States.

It is a common tradition in Swaziland for the king to pick a wife every year. Last year, the King Mswati III chose a new bride during the well-known Reed Dance ceremony, also known as Umhlanga.

The Reed Dance is an annual Swazi and Zulu tradition ceremony held om either August or September.

Tens of thousands of unmarried and childless Swazi girls and women converge at Ludzidzini to participate in the eight-day event and would-be King's brides are publicly scrutinized to ascertain that their virginity was still intact.

Formerly guest2, she asked of aknight in a shinning armor, and got a king instead:)
I wonder if they have women's lib.(maendeleo ya wanawake party) over there.Seems to me that ,this kind of cultural practices are retrogressive in this modern society, and that foremost, women should speak up against this practice.
I also wonder if the cabinet minister just consented to the idea to avoid hearing...You are fired".

My answer to this Q is Mswati just want to hit it in pretense of keeping traditions but at least it is legit, we know elsewhere most men hit it with no celebrations and the younger the better however inexperienced , do I say ? :-)

It is not a University, it is a pre-college establishment where the International Baccalaureate is taught and students that graduate from there can then apply for highly competitive scholarships in many countries around for university. The one in Swaziland is the only one in Africa, and one of about 16 around the world. So she should be using that awesome education to go abroad and further her studies, then take that new knowledge home... But alas, this is not the case.

@mkenya halisi. You are a shallow minded fool! How is this related to diaspora. Your comments on mwakilishi always devolve in to attacking Kenyans in the diaspora. Why do you even read mwakilishi news if you so loath anything diaspora. I can say for a fact that you used to be in the diaspora and were such a LOSER and couldn't make it, went back to Kenya and are still a LOSER, cannot go back to the diaspora and thus the bitterness.

When the late Hugh Hefner did the same thing I never heard anyone say it was backward or retrogressive. Why the double standards. Is it because the king is black?

why are you bringing Hefner here ? I would still say the same , nasty old man! There are no double standards here on Mwakilishi since there was no comparative analysis on King Mswati or Hugh Hefner.

Mumbi, you are the one bringing in the race. Hefner was in the business of exploiting women. It has nothing to do with american culture. But this african fellow/king can at least hide in culture.Infact, I would answer you better if you could elaborate on"hefner did the same thing".
I would argue that hefner's culture does not encourage what Mswati is doing.

Mumbi ur my kinda girl thank you for making sence to this wazungu nyeusi african diaspora who love complaining all the time. Our African culture allows a man to marry more than 1 wife if ur well enough to take care of them!thats our culture n we should respect it!Some men n diaspora r married twice n yet they r poking king Ma watu eyes. How many diaspora have married ya makaratasi n they have their wives living with them or they have divorced their wives/husband to do so??Thats means u have married two women but most zigzag pple will refuse to face that truth. Please let's maintain our culture as Africans

Only somebody out of their mind can support man marrying 14 wives at the same time while HIV/AIDS is wiping out many communities. Do you know that Swaziland has the highest rate of HIV/AID in the world of 27.7%, Botswana - 25.16%, Lesotho - 23.39%, South Africa - 18.92%. When men get into their 40 yrs they slow down. Those women will sleep with drivers, shamba boys, watu wa mkono. The dude cannot keep up with the job

@Mkenya halisi. Here again the whack a mole of foolishly attacking the Kenyan diaspora. It appears you have not been laid for a while and the only way to get off is to direct blind rage to a group of people who have nothing to do with the issue being commented on. You see what i have done there. Attacking you with the foolish assumption that you have NOT been laid. Did this to demonstrate your MO. This is you commenting on mwakilishi. Lay off it and do something better with your time if you cannot make an intelligent comment

Oh gosh what is happening King Mswati?! Can you stop with the sex all the time and start building the country. Such a perverted, downright gross king and equally a pervert is the father who would give up his daughter in the name of a dated cultural norm. Maybe he is also looking to marrying the king's 15 years old daughter. Can I have a puking bucket please!

It is interesting how some people here play the"culture card" when it is convenient for them.
There is no one monolithic african culture.Luos used to take out their from teeth. How come they dont do it now? culture, adopts and changes according to times.Marrying many wives nowdays is not necessary. For practical purposes, it was necessary to marry many wives when the population of africa was 1 million. Now africa is the most populous continent in the world with 1.2 billion people. We do not need kuzaana for the sake of it,when we cannt even feed and cloth ourselves.
As for me, I find one wife,or girlfriend quite a handful, cannot imagine 3, let alone 19.
Someone mentioned here that Mswati rules one of the poorest countries in the world,if true, you can see where his brain is- in the gutter.

@ MkenyaHalisi, please stop comparing apples and oranges. In discussion here is King Mswati taking in the 19th wife instead of improving the lives of his citizens. I did not see gays, pedophilia and drugs discussed. Stick to the topic. Na wewe on a more serious note unauza tumbuzi ama you are still milking?
