A section of Kenyans on Twitter on Wednesday took to the platform to castigate the United States embassy in Nairobi over what they termed as "double standards" by the embassy following the embassy's stand on last week's general elections.
The consulate posted a message on its Twitter handle condemning the recent attacks on civil societies by the state, and soon later Kenyans responded to express their outrage.
"A free civil society is critical to democracy and fulfilling the promise of Kenya's constitution. US urges the government to protect their rights," the consulate said.
Twitter users would hear none of it, with most of them terming the consulate's message flat and almost an endorsement of efforts to suppress free speech and limit the democratic space by the state.
The fact that the embassy had earlier called on those aggrieved by the presidential election outcome to seek legal redress seemed to add more salt on the injury. Here are some of the reactions:
Gerald Lepariyo, "How comes you didn't speak about credibility of results transmissions? Stop double standards."
Popular blogger Robert Alai said, "Yawa US Embassy. Stop being vague. Be blunt."
"Both the US embassy and the US president have endorsed the regime. It's too early to start faulting it again," another user said.
"Would you wish for government to protect the sanctity of citizens' votes rather than endorse subversion by statutory forms being cooked?"
"You shouldn't mince words. This behaviour by the government cannot and should not be tolerated. That one should be clear in your statements."

It is my view that the government put itself in an awkward position by going after established NGOs right in the middle of an election standoff. I have tried to think what else can be read from this irresponsible act other than mischief and suppression. With all the support and approval Jubilee and IEBC received worldwide after the polls, why would the Jubilee government front Fazul Mohammed, a seemingly a puppet executive to soil and ruin its victory. As much as I do not condone Raila's initial gesture to incite his supporters for mass action - which appears to have failed- Jubilee leadership is equally moronic given the unfortunate actions from the government agencies following the poll results announcement. If Jubilee survives NASA's court challenge - for it appears they have a game card that is well guarded - it is not because they are good at their game, but because they are lucky. Just like NASA which was initially poorly advised after the announcement, Jubilee must be having very poor advisers. How else can you explain deregistering KHRC and Afrog and attempting to raid their offices right when the police are being criticized for shooting innocent citizens in the middle of an election outcome standoff? How Can you explain detaining of an IEBC official at JKIA with no good cause in the eve of NASA's so called "major announcement"? I believe Jubilee won but with these infamous decisions by some of the government's agencies, I am starting to think twice about their credibility.

We must all admit that for years this NGO’s, in total contravention of the laws of Kenya; have become tools to Sabotage African Government that do not bend to worship the Western powers. This Neo- Colonialist channel Billions of Dollars in to this Organizations to destabilize Democratically Elected Governments.
The Nobel cause behind the original establishing of this organizations have been crucified at the altar of voracity and Bigotry.
The People of Kenya’ under the Government of President Uhuru Kenyatta, and his deputy William Ruto, must immediately commence the process of reclaiming the Country. As we speak, Kenya is in the grasps of Regime changers through their Puppets, NGO’s. This NGO’s must now operate according to the laws of Kenya not their Foreign MASTERS.
