A youthful Kenyan High School teacher has won the 2019 Global Teacher Prize.

Peter Tabichi, a Mathematics and Physics teacher at little-known Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School in Pwani Village, Nakuru County, has been announced as the winner of this year's Varkey Foundation Global Teacher Prize.

He has been declared the winner of the prestigious award at a ceremony held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Sunday.

The $1 million (Sh100 million) Global Teacher Prize was established five years ago and honors one exceptional teacher every year.

Tabichi becomes the first African and male teacher to win the global award.

He has beaten nine other finalists who were selected from 10,000 applicants for the award from 179 countries.

The 36-year-old teacher is known for his generosity in helping children from poor backgrounds as well as orphans.

He gives away 80 percent of his monthly salary to help the needy.

Huu ni mfano mzuri sana kwa Wakenya wote kufuata. Kwanza, kuanzia na viongozi wote waliochaguliwa na wananchi.
Pili, ningependa kuona viongozi wote wa makanisa wakifuate mfano huu.

Mr. Tabichi, there are not many of you in this world. May this set the ball rolling for Kenyans of means that greedy accumulation of wealth is meaningless. May you and those in your circle be richly blessed.

You invest in the young men and women working hard to create change and you will never go wrong. Young people are magical when given opportunities unfortunately a foolish government can't see it. Peter Tabichi congratulations.
