Inspector-General of Police Hilary Mutyambai has pledged to take action against a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer accused of breaking families.
The Bungoma-based detective is accused of 'breaking families' by leaking confidential information gathered through communication surveillance technology.
The matter was brought to the attention of Mutyambai during his weekly interactive Twitter session dubbed “#EngageTheIG”.
“A DCI police officer from our village misusing his privileges. He tracks anyone mwenye awaelewani (who is at loggerheads with him) with DCI gadgets!!! He tells other villagers where you are at every given time. Families have broken coz (because) of him. He works in Bungoma as assistant DCI don’t know which division,” Joe Rawlings12 told Mutyambai.
Mutyambai asked the concerned Kenyan to send him a direct message, giving more details about the officer.
“Do you have the name and which is your village? Kindly share more information in my DM.”
#EngageTheIG runs every other Monday from 11 am to 12 pm, where Kenyans are invited to ask the Inspector-General any questions relating to the force.
Cases of DCI officers misusing intelligence-gathering gadgets to obtain private information about a person are not new. A court order is required to gather confidential information from a suspect.
