Diaspora Mass Action Call: Kenya Ni Kwetu Campaign June 28th

Printer-friendly versionPDF version

A group formed by Kenyans in the U.S. under the name "Diaspora Mass Action Call: Kenya Ni Kwetu Campaign June 28th" is calling on all Kenyans in the Diaspora to align forces with Kenyans back in Kenya on Thursday June 28th 2012, who will be holding a peaceful protest on the same day at Uhuru Park's Freedom corner, followed by a march to the Parliament buildings.

"Like the Kenya Ni Kwetu Initiative, the diaspora initiative is a protest against poor governance, impunity, greed, and most importantly the suppression of our right to vote freely and fairly in the upcoming elections," says a message from the group.

The planned demonstrations in Nairobi and at the Kenyan Embassy in Washington, DC come after Kenyan Members of Parliament passed several amendments in the Elections Act and Political Parties Act of the new Kenyan constitution this week. The amendments altered the qualifications for running for elective office, and this move was seen as being self-serving to the MPs by a majority of Kenyans. After much uproar from Kenyans, Parliament overturned some of the amendments they had passed. The overturns are half-baked, however, since some of the outrageous amendments still remain (READ: Huge Uproar from Kenyans Forces MPs to Rescind on Self-Serving Amendments).

The diaspora campaign is planning to not only include online mass action, but also a protest outside the Kenyan Embassy in Washington DC on the same date their Kenya counterparts have their protest.

Diaspora Mass Action Call: Kenya Ni Kwetu Campaign June 28th is calling on all Kenyans in the USA to:

  1. Hold a peaceful protest outside the Kenyan Embassy in Washington DC on not only the plight of Kenyans in Kenya, but also the negligence in service towards diaspora Kenyans by the embassy.
  2. Boycott absolutely all visits to the USA by Kenyan politicians until they withdraw all modifications made to the constitution as well as show proof of championing the diaspora call for more polling stations in larger diaspora countries.
  3. Mass Call and Text various members of parliament and admonish them for their greed, impunity, and poor governance ( List of names, emails, and addresses will be posted on page )
  4. DONATE....DONATE...DONATE...towards expenses that will be incurred for the Kenya ni Kwetu rally on Thursday June 28th at Uhuru Park.

More information on the campaign can be found on their website or on their facebook page.
