One Killed, Two Churches Looted in Mombasa Riots Following Muslim Cleric's Killing

One person was killed and two churches were looted in Kenya's port of Mombasa Monday, after the killing of a radical cleric linked to Somalia's Al-Qaeda allied Shebab, officials and witnesses said.

"One person has been killed, he was slashed to death during the protests," said regional police chief Aggrey Adoli.

An AFP reporter, who saw the body of a dead protester, said two churches were also looted by rioters, angry after cleric Aboud Rogo Mohammed was shot by an unknown attacker.

Thousands of angry protesters gathered following Mohammed's killing, blocking off streets around the mosque where he had often preached, setting fire to vehicles and chanting slogans in his support.

"There is chaos in town now, and our officers are on the ground dispersing the rioters to maintain peace," said Adoli. "They are demonstrating against the killing of Aboud Rogo, who was shot by unknown people."

Mombasa, Kenya's main port, is also a popular tourist destination.

The whole city is on fire, there are looters in the streets, cars have been damaged, some have been burnt," said Francis Auma, from the local organisation Muslims for Human Rights.

"An imam in the mosque shouted through the speaker 'blood for blood', and immediately youths started stoning cars", said witness Dennis Odhiambo, whose car was damaged, and was forced to flee into a police station for safety.

Witnesses said that Mohammed's car was riddled with bullets, and a photograph released by his supporters showed his bloody corpse slumped behind the wheel of his vehicle.

For an Imam to incite violence goes against what Islam teaches because innocent lives are lost and the blood is on the Imam's hands, and Allah will prosecute him accordingly.

May Peace Prevail in Mombasa.

When you say it is against Islam's teaching you ought to give a quote either from the Koran or Hadith's that make you say that. Here is a quote from Chapter 9 of the Koran:

"Then when the Sacred Months (the Ist, 7th, 11th, and 12th months of the Islamic calendar) have passed, then kill the Mushrikun wherever you find them, and capture them and besiege them, and prepare for them each and every ambush. But if they repent and perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat), and give Zakat, then leave their way free. Verily, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful"

Correct me if am wrong; but this verse calls for Jihad against those who do not believe in Islam. How can that be peaceful in any circumstance?

“O you who believe (in Allah's Oneness and in His Messenger (Muhammad)! Verily, the Mushrikun (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah, and in the Message of Muhammad) are Najasun (impure). So let them not come near Al-Masjid-al-Haram (at Makkah) after this year, and if you fear poverty, Allah will enrich you if He will, out of His Bounty. Surely, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

Fight against those who

(1) believe not in Allah,

(2) nor in the Last Day,

(3) nor forbid that which has been forbidden by Allah and His Messenger

(4) and those who acknowledge not the religion of truth (i.e. Islam) among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians), until they pay the Jizyah with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.

Fight against them why? Because they do not believe what you believe?

dude. the verse you quoted is true. but you quoted it out of context. the whole chapter is about a war that was being fought. the verse was revealed in war and all the muslims were fighting for there land and wives who were being captured by the non-muslims (al-quraish tribe). so the verse was revealed to give orders to the muslims to kill em ONLY on THAT battle field. not anytime they wished. islam condemns all innocent killing.

n i as a muslim agree that burnin churches is the wrong step. so please, we all have the bad ones in our tribes n religion. but that doesnt mean all are bad. Islam is a peacefull religion and so are true muslims. the violent minority are the ones that are causing this. this is just to enlighten you. we should come together and stop this.

What has the church and the innocent person had to do with the killing of this guy? Talk of evil and we all know how Muslim acts harrasing the innocent wananchi and targeting Christians. I guess that is what Allah commands them to do!

Shame! to the coast protesters (Muslims) Is it the Christians who killed their leader? Then why burn the church and fight Christians? More, breaking peoples cars is an act of violence! we are trying to preach peace after the 2007 PEV. Let them grow up last time I checked a Christian pastor was killed in the coastal area and no riots followed.

The Muslim people are violent and have the onus of proving otherwise.
