About Bridge International Academies

Bridge International Academies is a for-profit chain of nursery and primary schools that has re-engineered the entire life-cycle of basic education. Our academies deliver high-quality education for just $5 a month to families living in the bottom of the pyramid thanks to our vertically integrated Academy-in-a-Box approach, which leverages data, technology, and scale in order to keep quality up and prices down.

Bridge International Academies was born out of a conversation Jay Kimmelman, Shannon May, and Phil Frei shared in 2007.  Passionate advocates for education and issues related to global poverty, our three cofounders wondered why no one was thinking about schools in developing countries the way Starbucks® thought about coffee.  Why hadn’t anyone tried to tackle education for the bottom of the pyramid by building a large-scale chain of low-cost, high-quality schools?  Costs could remain low due to scale.  Quality would be ensured due to standardization.  Monetizing the institution would guarantee sustainability and, importantly, place the parents in control.

Currently, we have 134 academies in Kenya and over 50,000 pupils enrolled and are growing at a rate of one new academy every three days. Ten years from now we plan to be operating in at least a dozen countries and to count 10,000,000 children as our pupils.

We’re looking for talented individuals across the sectors of education, business, technology, and more to join us in disrupting global education and providing Knowledge for all.
