Raila Vows to Legalize Chang'aa If Elected
National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential flag bearer Raila Odinga says that he will lift the longstanding ban on traditional illicit liquor, popularly known as Chang’aa, and legalize its brewing and sale.
Speaking during a campaign rally in Sirisia, Bungoma County, on Friday the former Prime Minister said that, if elected the head of state in the upcoming polls, he will legalize the making of the brew.
The Orange Democratic Movement leader argued that no law that out rightly declares traditional brews as illegal exists, saying that he will allow Kenyans enjoy their favorite drink. “The government should allow their people to enjoy their favorite drinks,” Odinga said amid cheers from the crowd.
“The work of the police is to ensure the safety of Kenyans, not arresting those consuming Chang’aa,” he added.
The Jubilee government in the last four years embarked on a fierce campaign to fight brewing and sale of second generation brew, after it killed several people in different parts of the country.
