Raila: I Will Resign If Sonko is Elected as Nairobi Governor

John Wanjohi Jul 16, 2017

National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga says that he will immediately resign from being the President in the event that Jubilee candidate for Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is elected as the Nairobi governor in the month’s contest.

The former Prime Minister said that Sonko’s victory against the incumbent Evans Kidero of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party will be a big blow to his Presidency.

“If Sonko is the governor and I am elected as the president, I will resign on the very day,” said Odinga at a rally during the weekend.

Raila sentiments comes just weeks after he claimed that it would be a shame for him to be received by Mike Sonko at the airport after foreign trips, if he trounced President Uhuru Kenyatta in the August 8 polls.

Jubilee party has listed the Nairobi Governor race as one of the seats they should snatch from the opposition. A Recent opinion poll by TIFA put Kidero ahead of the Nairobi Senator with a difference of only one percent between them, the two being the main frontrunners of the coveted seat.

In the 2013 general elections, Jubilee clinched the senate and the Woman Representative seat in Nairobi, while their candidate Ferdinand Waititu lost to ODM’s Evans Kidero with less than 100,000 votes, a mistake the ruling party is keen to rectify.

Raila will face President Uhuru Kenyatta in a typical 2013 presidential race rematch, with each of them expressing optimism that they will win in the next month’s race.
