US Applauds Kenya for Peaceful Elections, Urges Leaders to Respect Rule of Law

Irungu Thairu Aug 10, 2017

The US State Department has applauded Kenya for exercising their democratic rights by holding a peaceful and transparent electoral process.

In a press statement, State Department Spokesman Heather Nauert says as a longtime friend of Kenya, the US welcomes the statements of the international and domestic election observers that Kenyan voters’ voices were heard through the ballot box.

The State Department also urges voters as well as political aspirants to patiently allow the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) complete its tallying process.

The Department also urges leaders to refrain from issuing threats which could trigger acts of violence but instead channel any election disputes through laid down procedures in accordance with the constitution and rule of law.

“If candidates dispute results, it is important that they do so in accordance with the constitution and rule of law and not through threats or acts of violence,” reads a statement from the State Department.
