NASA Claims 100 Supporters Killed in Protests, Rejects President Uhuru's Re-Election

In their press briefing on Saturday in Nairobi, opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) claimed that over 100 of their supporters have been killed by police in the ongoing protests over declaration of President Uhuru as the winner of Tuesday's elections.

Gunshots in Kibera and Mathare area in Nairobi as well as in Kisumu, Homabay and Migori have continued to rent the air as police disperse protesting supporters.

A 10 year-old girl was shot dead in Mathare Area 2 on Saturday, while 11 others were reportedly killed in Nairobi and Kisumu.

Acting interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i however, denied claims that police had killed protesters.

Opposition leaders led by Johnstone Muthama and James Orengo said that more than 100 people had already been killed during the post election protests.

"The number includes 10 children. Police have put them in bags to hide them. The violence being meted is intended to make NASA submit to defeat," Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama told the press on Saturday.

"We want to remind Matiang'i and [IG Joseph] Boinnet that they are personally responsible for this," he added.

Muthama also maintained that the coalition will not accept the re-election of President Uhuru adding that "the will of the people must come to force".

"Uhuru does not have any electoral mandate to be a president. We have the will and determination and your will will count," he said.

"We appeal to our supporters to stay out of harm's way. A stolen election does not amount to establishment of the government, they should remain calm," he said.

"In this situation they don't go to mortuaries, this time they are one step ahead they are putting them in body bags.. the bags were distributed. we raised an alarm and nobody heard us," Orengo said.

"This is an operation that the government knew what they were doing."

"What is happening in Kibera is a military operation. Do you kill criminals? That is not the law. We have talked to our sources in the police and they say those doing the shooting are not our people," Orengo noted.
