Mike Sonko Rejects Sh25 Million Budget Set Aside for His Swearing-in Ceremony

Nairobi County governor-elect Mike Mbuvi Sonko has rejected the Sh25 million budget that has been set aside for his swearing-in as the new Nairobi governor.

The immediate former Nairobi senator said that the money should be channeled to offsetting the one-month wage arrears owed to county government of Nairobi workers.

The sh 25 million was set aside by the Assumption of Office Committee following Sonko's victory over outgoing governor Evans Kidero on August 8th election.

Sonko directed Nairobuli county Chief Finance Officer Luke Gatimu to disburse the salaries to the county employees within the next 48 hours.

“We had a fruitful meeting with Kenya County Government Workers Union (KCGWU) and agreed workers must be paid before I assume office,” he said.

Sonko was speaking after holding a meeting with the county government union officials who were scheduled to go on strike over the July pay.

Nairobi staff branch chairman Boniface Waweru and vice chairman Kennedy Malimo attended the meeting.

Sh2.4 million for fuel of VIP cars, Sh6.3 million for security and Sh2.7 million for works, Sh11.1 million was allocated to the swearing –in ceremony, public health Sh384,900 and briefing and documentation Sh2 million are the breakdown of the total budget set by the assumption of office committee.

Sonko said he will hire over 1,000 youths, including members of the Sonko Rescue Team, to remove posters of candidates of the just-concluded elections.

Sonko further asked residents to stay calm and resume their daily activities, instead of heeding calls for demonstrations.

“Raila has no authority to declare any day a holiday. We therefore ask Kenyans to ignore the calls and continue with their activities as usual,” said Sonko.

“We need to put elections behind us. We assure the residents that we shall provide maximum security everywhere within the county.”
