IEBC Commissioner Roselyn Akombe Denies Fleeing Kenya to US over Election Credibility Questions

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioner Dr Akombe Roselyn has rubbished rumors doing rounds on social media that she has fled the country to the United States over election credibility questions.

Dr Akombe was reportedly temporarily detained at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) as she tried to leave the country on Tuesday night without clearance from the Head of Civil Service, Joseph Kinyua as required of all state employees, but was later allowed to board a flight to New York after the hitch was rectified.

It was the hitch that sparked speculation that she was fleeing the country over August 8th election credibility related matters, but Akombe has clarified that she left the country to the US for an official duty.

"The statements attributed to me on social media following my delayed flight in Nairobi are false and unwarranted," she said.

“I’m deeply concerned by the statements attributed to me on my departure from Nairobi. They are false and unwarranted. While it is unfortunate that my departure was delayed, I at no time indicated that I was fleeing my beloved country due to questions raised on the credibility of our elections,” she added.

“I will return to continue working with my colleagues on the next stages of our electoral process,” she said.
