Police Drive Away NASA MPs, Supporters Outside Supreme Court

Police officers condoning Supreme Court in Nairobi were forced to drive away a group of National Super Alliance (NASA) supporters led by MPs John Mbadi, Simba Arati, Gladys Wanga, Opiyo Wandayi and Narok Senator Ledama Olekina who arrived at the court demanding to access the Supreme Court precincts.

NASA made good their threats to access the court compound for a vigil , after police denied a formal request made by the coalition on Saturday to hold the event outside the court building.

The group attempted to walk towards the Supreme Court, but armed police officers resisted, pursuing them far from the court premises.

Police further forced the group to put off a public address system they were using, and allowed them conduct their prayers a distance from the court precincts without the PA.

The MPs resisted police move claiming it was their right to pray whenever they wanted.

Police had earlier warned they would not allow anyone to group outside the Supreme Court. Presidential petition proceedings filed by Raila Odinga at the court are ongoing.

The Supreme Court judges together with parties in the petition had been expected at the court, where judges were to give rulings on interlocutory applications at 7pm today (Sunday).

The hearing of the case will formally kick off on Monday at 9am. Applicant's attorneys will be the first to argue their case, before respondents are allowed to counter the arguments.
