IEBC Ready to Conduct another Election, Chairman Chebukati Says

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati says that the commission open to investigations and prosecution over accusations of mishandling the August 8th presidential election.

In a press briefing on Friday, following the nullification of President Uhuru Kenyatta reelection by the Supreme Court, Chebukati called on the Director of Public prosecutions Keriako Tobiko to investigate and prosecute any staff who may have messed up the election.

Chebukati addressed the media hours after National Super Alliance leaders, led by Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka called for immediate prosecution of IEBC chiefs.

Raila said Chebukati and his officials "belong to jail" and declared that they have no faith in the commission.

Chebukati, however, defended his work and vowed he would not resign because he was not “personally touched by the Supreme Court ruling”.

He said the commission would was ready to proceed and conduct the rerun.

"I am confident that we can deliver the election in 60 days. The Court said IEBC to run the election. This is the only institution that can do that," he said.
