The US State Department on Friday released a new travel warning to Kenya. In the warning, the Department cautions U.S. citizens to avoid the area near the Kenya-Somalia border because of threats by al-Shabaab.

US Citizens are told to avoid travel in the entire counties of Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Tana River, and Lamu. They are also told to avoid all areas north of Malinda in Kilifi County as well as the Eastleigh neighborhood of Nairobi.

“Violent and sometimes fatal crimes, including armed carjackings, muggings, home invasions and burglaries, and kidnappings can occur at any time. U.S. citizens and U.S. Embassy employees have been victims of such crimes,” part of the alert reads.

“There has been an increase in armed incursions by herders on private farms and wildlife conservancies in Laikipia, Baringo, and Samburu counties in central Kenya,” the alert further warns.
