IEBC Commissioners' Lives in Danger, Raila Claims
National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga claims that some Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioners lives are in danger after their security details were withdrawn by the government.
Speaking in a press briefing at the Okoa Kenya Offices in Nairobi, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader said that the commissioners were being threatened by state agencies.
Raila further alleged that some electoral body officials were also receiving threatening messages.
”A number of IEBC commissioners are under serious threat by the government after their security was withdrawn. Some are receiving very threatening mails to their lives,” the former Prime Minister said.
The NASA principal said that threats were meant to intimidate the commissioners into making sure that President Uhuru Kenyatta wins the 17th October repeat election.
The former Prime Minister called on the government and Inspector General of Police, Joseph Boinnet to reinstate the officials’ security detail so as to conduct their mandate in peace.
A week before August 8th elections, IEBC ICT director Christopher Msando was killed under unclear circumstances and his body dumped in a thicket in Kikuyu area, Kiambu County.
Police are still carrying out investigations into the murder of the Director.
