Withhold Raila's Passport ahead of Repeat Elections, MP Tells Government

John Wanjohi Sep 21, 2017

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has urged the government to withhold National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate Raila Odinga’s travel documents ahead of the repeat presidential election.

The MP alleged that the former Prime Minister was likely to plunge the country into chaos then flee abroad.

Barasa said he would be tabling a Bill in the National Assembly to ensure that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader surrendered his passport before the polls.

“I will go to Parliament to ensure that Raila surrenders his passport as he will cause chaos and flee. We want him here,” said Mr Barasa.

"The Opposition is likely to cause trouble should their demands to have the election postponed fail," he added.

"The Opposition is scared and has resorted to inciting their supporters to take to the streets and cause mayhem."

Barasa said the Bill he is planning to sponsor would ensure that NASA leaders would remain in the country to witness first hand the state of the country should they call for mass action.

The MP alleged the Opposition leaders are attempting use violence to capture power.

"They have been engaging in violence to intimidate their rivals and that should not be the case in the new dispensation," he said.

“We should have a peaceful election. There is no need for people to cause violence in order to attain political office. This is why I want Raila's passport detained,” he said.

He bashed the opposition claiming that it was ironical it wanted reforms at IEBC yet they were unable to conduct free and fair party nominations ahead of the August 8th general election.
