I Won't Resign, IEBC CEO Ezra Chiloba Says

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chief Executive Officer Ezra Chiloba remains adamant that he will not vacate office despite protests by opposition National Super Alliance (NASA).

In an interview with KTN News on Tuesday, Chiloba said he has the mandate to oversee the preparation for the repeat presidential election and ruled out possibilities of resigning.

Chiloba noted that the Supreme Court ruling pointed out at a systemic failed which dates back to several years and the commission has been toiling towards polishing operations at the election body. 

The CEO admitted the commission  will have to change the way results are transmitted during October 26th election based on the apex court ruling.

He said that Dubai-based firm, Al Ghurair will still print the the ballot papers for the fresh poll as the UNDP option was still in discussion but welcomes move by United Nations to provide experts to oversee the printing process as this will bolster transparency in the process.

  The Opposition has vowed to stage protests to force Ezra Chiloba and 11 other top officials to resign for bungling the August 8th vote.

On Monday, National Super Alliance (NASA) supporters conducted demos in Kisumu and outside IEBC headquarters at the Anniversary towers in Nairobi, demanding for the resignation of Chiloba.

"I have not thought about resigning, I have got responsibility before me and I have to discharge it," Chiloba said.

He also said the commission was investigating who was leaking Memos at the office and maintained that no officer has been sacked.

"We will use the same KIEMS kits and we are in the process of reconfiguring them. We are investigating the issue of who is leaking our internal memos. Our ICT Director James Muhati is still in office,".

"We have to look at our infrastructure and procedures in the electoral process. We have to learn to build institutions for the long term,".
