Germany Warns Kenya over Current Political Environment

Germany has joined a list of foreign countries that has expressed their concerns over the current political environment in Kenya ahead of the repeat presidential election scheduled for October 26th.

In a statement issued by the Germany embassy in Kenya on Saturday, Germany warned Kenya against amending electoral laws weeks to the election, adding that the proposed changes by the ruling Jubilee party were ill timed.

Germany further asked the opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) to soften their stance on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission. It said the moves taken by the two side puts a risk on Kenya's democratic gains.

"This dispute is putting the democratic electoral process at risk. The Kenyan economy is already suffering as a consequence of the uncertainty in the country. There is a danger of escalation." read a statement from the Embassy.

"This not the time to make excessive demands of the independent electoral commission or to change electoral laws at short notice." read part of the statement.

On Monday, foreign envoys joined hands in issuing a warning, and warned of consequences on politicians out to cause chaos or derail the election.

"We are watching what the politicians are saying and doing. Some leaders are stoking community tensions and they must stop. We will use our constitutions to bar these politicians from traveling to our countries," US ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec said on Monday.
