NASA Supporters Clash with Police as they Defy Government Ban on anti-IEBC Demos

John Wanjohi Oct 13, 2017

National Super Alliance supporters on Friday defied a ban by acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i and flocked the streets of Kenya’s main cities.

The government on Friday said it had banned anti-IEBC protests by the opposition within Central Business Districts in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu.

In Kisumu, protesters blocked key roads leading into the lakeside city and lit bonfires as they chanted anti-IEBC slogans.

In Mombasa, Police fired teargas at a crowd attempting to enter the coastal city's CBD and scattered then away.

In Nairobi, demonstrators led by Siaya Senator James Orengo were tear-gassed by police officers in as they tried to forcefully make their way into the Central Business.

Orengo, flanked by other opposition MPs had earlier addressed a media at ODM offices in Capitol Hill and vowed to defy the government's ban on demonstrations in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu CBDs.

“We want to condemn Mr. Matiang’i for claiming that we cannot enjoy our rights to picket and demonstrate. It is the responsibility of the police to provide security during demonstrations held within the law,” said Orengo.

“From here, we’ll be headed to the CBD for anti-IEBC demos, we have notified the police about these demonstrations,” a defiant Orengo added.

Demonstrators are still engaging in running battles with police as they try to sneak their way into IEBC headquarters at the anniversary towers along University way.
