Police Seize Military Grade M4 Assault Rifle from Billionaire Jimmy Wanjigi's House

John Wanjohi Oct 17, 2017

Police searching billionaire businessman Jimmy Wanjigi's residence in Nairobi's Muthaga estate have recovered an M4 assault rifle and 600 rounds of ammunition.

The officers further seized five pistols licensed to the businessman alongside one shotgun and a military grade M4 assault rifle.

The controversial businessman did not have a license for the M4 rifle, which is not allowed in civilian hands according to police. However, family members present during the search told the media that the weapons were all registered.

The raid was carried out by a multi-agency team drawn from elite Flying Squad, Special Crimes Prevention Unit and General Service Unit (GSU).

The officers searched the tycoon’s palatial residence after obtaining a temporary warrant to search all properties belonging to Wanjigi, who locked himself in a bunker for hours. The officers were granted permission to “open, search, have access, seize, remove and carry away, firearms ammunition and explosives, as well as documents related to importation of weapons.”

Said Mohamed, the head of flying squad on Monday night said detectives wanted to grill Wanjigi over links to the cache of weapons recovered at a villa in Malindi.

Wanjigi has since moved to court seeking orders to block his arrest. On Tuesday, Justice Chacha Mwita granted the businessman a Ksh50,000 anticipatory bail and ordered police not to arrest him until his case is heard on October 19th.

Nasa leader Raila Odinga visited Wanjigi's home on Tuesday evening, but is yet to comment on the incident.
