NASA Governor Differs with Raila, Tells Residents Not to Demonstrate During Next Week's Election

Turkana Governor Josphat Nanok has asked residents of his county not to demonstrate during the October 26th repeat elections, contrary to calls by National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga.

Flanked by Turkana Central MP John Lodepe, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader called on residents to maintain peace and not allow themselves be incited against each other by a few leaders.

Nanok also joined a list of leaders who want President Uhuru Kenyatta and his nemesis Raila Odinga to hold talks and end the political impasse facing the country.

“President Uhuru Kenyatta and Mr (Raila) Odinga should put the country first and negotiate so that there is peace in the country,” said the governor.

MP Lodepe said he does not support Raila's calls for countrywide protests during next week's election and asked residents not to take part im the demos. “I don’t agree with Raila on demonstrations. Don’t protest. Just sit at home. If we demonstrate police will shoot you and we will destroy the little investment we have in our growing town of Lodwar,” said the MP.

Nanok and Lopeke were speaking during Mashujaa Day celebrations held at Moi Gardens in Lodwar town on Friday.

Raila has been rallying his supporters to boycott next Thursday's repeat election, and instead take part in nationwide demonstrations to call for electoral reforms.

Speaking on Friday in Bondo, Siaya County, Raila said he will issue a statement on the way forward on October 25th. "On Wednesday I will talk to Kenya and I will tell you what you should do ahead of the polls," Raila said when he addressed mourners at a funeral service in Bondo on Friday.
