IEBC: Thursday's Election to Proceed as Planned
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) says Thursday's repeat presidential election will go on as scheduled.
Speaking during a media briefing at the National Tallying Centre Bomas of Kenya on Wednesday, IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati said that based on the assurance of support from different stakeholders, the election will proceed as earlier planned.
"Elections will go on tomorrow as scheduled, polling stations to be opened by 6 a.m, please come out and vote for your preferred Presidential candidate," Mr Chebukati said.
"The President has assured all Kenyans security during this election period," he added.
Chebukati further said that the commission would consider postponing the elections in areas where it finds problems conducting the poll. "Where we encounter hitches, we will apply elections regulations which include suspension of the process."
He further condemned police brutality on opposition National Super Alliance anti-IEBC protesters saying that they have a constitutional right to demonstrate and urged police to exercise restrain in countering the protesters.
Earlier today, a petition filed by three voters at the Supreme Court seeking to postpone the repeat election failed to proceed due to lack of quorum.
