State House Spokesman Responds to Raila's Claim about Thursday's Repeat Election

State House spokesman Manoah Esipisu has responded National Super Alliance (NASA) leader Raila Odinga's remarks regarding Thursday's repeat presidential election.

Speaking on Friday in an interview with a local FM station, Raila claimed that the voter turnout for the fresh election was low as 25 per cent of the registered voters.

However, speaking in an interview with CNN on Friday, Esipisu termed Raila's as "laughable."

Esipisu said that the Raila is neither the chairperson nor a commissioner of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and cannot therefore determine how many voters turned out for the repeat poll.

"Raila allegations are only laughable. He is neither the chair nor a commissioner of the electoral body," reiterated Esipisu.

Asked on the legitimacy of Uhuru's presidency if he is declared by IEBC, Esipisu said the poll cannot be illegitimate because a section of Kenyans boycotted it.

He cited a few countries where a section have boycotted and the electoral commission went ahead to declare the winner.

"The election cannot be illegitimate just because some people boycotted the process and also the turnout being low. Countries like Romania and Kosovo recently had elections with low voter turnouts but they were not illegitimate. Liberia had an election in 2011 where some people boycotted the process but the then elected President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf still served her term," added Esipisu.
