IEBC Says Results in Four Nyanza Counties Won't Affect Final Presidential Tally
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) says it will declare final results of October 26th repeat presidential election without votes from Kisumu, Migori, Homa Bay and Siaya counties.
Addressing a media briefing after a closed-door meeting at the National tallying centre, IEBC vice chairperson, Consolata Nkatha Maina said the decision was arrived at after consultations with various stakeholders.
Nkatha further added that IEBC could not conduct the election in the four counties due to sustained violence and resistance by residents.
“Having completed the verification process of all results from the 266 constituencies that voted, and in accordance with Section 55B Article 3, IEBC is certified that results of the elections shall not be affected by voting in the areas where the process was postponed,” said the IEBC vice-chair.
The electoral commission called off the poll in the region citing security of their staff due to threats by locals.
“Some of our staff were hijacked, tortured, in some areas, some of their homes broken into and looted, others were forbidden and violently prevented from reporting to their polling stations and were literally chased away. Some had to take refuge in police stations up to now as we speak,” Chebukati said.
