Richard Onyonka Beats Jubilee's Anthony Kibagendi to Clinch Kitutu Chache South MP Seat

Ford Kenya’s Richard Onyonka has clinched the Kitutu Chache South parliamentary seat for the third consecutive time under three different political parties.

Onyonka was declared by Constituency Returning Officer Hilda Imbo as the winner of Tuesday's by-election.

Onyonka garnered 10,122 votes (45.86%) ahead of his closest rival Antony Kibagendi of Jubilee Party, who came in second with 5,074 votes (22.99%). The by-election was conducted in 115 polling stations in the constituency and registered a 37.4% voter turnout.

Kitutu Chache South constituency has 59,017 registered voters and only 22,072 votes were valid in the by-election, while 168 were rejected votes.

The by-election was held on Tuesday after Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) postponed the election of MP seat in the constituency a few days to the August 8th General Election following the death of Jubilee Party’s candidate Leonard Namwamba, who perished in a fatal road accident.

Onyonka won the seat in 2007 using PDP ticket and was re-elected in 2013 through an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party ticket.

Other candidates in the just concluded race were; Andrew Mokaya, 2,191 votes (9.93%), Henry Morara, 201 votes (0.91%), James Kegoro, 100 votes (0.45%) and Justus Onsongo, 60 votes ( 0.27%).
