John Kerry's Team Message to President Uhuru after Supreme Court Decision

The Carter Center Observation group under the stewardship of former US Secretary of State John Kerry has urged President Uhuru to initiate national dialogue following the Supreme Court decision that upheld his re-election.

On Monday, the Supreme Court dismissed two petitions challenging President Uhuru's October 26th repeat presidential election victory for lack of merit.

In a statement on Monday, the Carter Center asked the President to start the process of uniting the country.

"President Uhuru Kenyatta, who has a fresh mandate to lead all Kenyans, should re-initiate the national dialogue that culminated in the 2010 Constitution," the Carter Center noted.

The John Kerry's team also called on the police to exercise restraint while handling unarmed citizens and avoid using excessive force while countering demonstrators.

"We remind the Kenyan government of its obligation to protect the constitutional rights of peaceful assembly, free speech, and security of the person, to enable inclusive participation in the country’s political and dialogue processes," the team noted.

The Carter Center has been in the country in the last few months to observe the Kenyan elections. It's members observed both the cancelled August 8th election and the October 26th repeat poll.

While upholding the results of October 26th repeat elections, the six Supreme Court judges unanimously dismissed a petition filed by former Kilome MP Harun Mwau and another by members of civil society Njonjo Mue and Khelef Khalifa for lack of merit.

"The court has unanimously determined that the petitions are not merited. The petitions are hereby dismissed. The presidential election is upheld," Chief Justice David Maraga said.
