Several People Injured in a Stampede at President Uhuru's Inauguration

Several people are nursing injuries following a stampede at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani as masses tried to access the facility to attend President Uhuru Kenyatta's swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday morning.

The incident happened after the crowd overwhelmed security officers at the stadium's entrance, forcing police to fire teargas canisters to disperse them.

Officers had been deployed to man the gates and block citizens from entering after the venue was packed to its capacity by 10 am Tuesday. The master of ceremony had earlier announced that the stadium was full and urged those outside to follow the proceeding live from giant screens erected outside the facility.

The Kasarani Stadium has a capacity of 60,000 people. President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto took Oath of Office administered by Chief Registrar of Judiciary, Anne Amadi and in presence of Chief Justice David Maraga.

The function was attended by delegations drawn from 47 countries. Presidents Yoweri Museveni (Uganda), Paul Kagame (Rwanda), Salva Kiir (South Sudan), Mohammed Farmajo (Somalia), Edga Lungu (Zambia), Ian Khama (Botswana) among others.
