Robert Mugabe's Birthday Declared a National Holiday

Zimbabwe has declared former President Robert Mugabe's birthday as a national holiday only a week after he relinquished power, a state daily reported.

Mugabe resigned following pressure by the country's military, who took over power a week after he fired his Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

"It is hereby declared that February 21 of every year henceforth shall be a public holiday to be known as the Robert Mugabe National Youth Day," The Herald newspaper reported, citing a government gazette.

The move comes only weeks after Zimbabwe's biggest airport was renamed after Mugabe, who ruled the country for nearly 37 years.

Emmerson Mnangagwa, who served as vice president before Mugabe fired him, was sworn in as the country's new president last Friday.
