I'm Ready to Die, Raila Tells Gov't over Treason Charges

John Wanjohi Dec 19, 2017

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has declared that he is ready to die if that's what it takes to get electoral justice in the country.

Speaking at the burial ceremony of the late Kitui West Member of Parliament Francis Nyenze in Kabati, Kitui on Tuesday, a seemingly a fiery Raila maintained that he will be “sworn-in” as president despite warnings that he risks being charged with treason, which is punishable by death.

“If death is the price that we must pay that Kenyans get electoral justice, that there is no more election rigging in future, we are ready to pay that price. We will be sworn in wafanye kile wanataka kufanya (let them do what they want) ,” said Odinga amid cheers from his supporters.

Mr. Odinga insisted that he trounced President Kenyatta in the annulled August 8th presidential election. “We said we won the election and we will be sworn in. We have been warned with treason and death. I want to tell Githu Muigai and his boss. We will be sworn in and die,” declared Odinga.

Attorney General Githu Muigai warned that inauguration of the opposition leader amounts to high treason, adding that persons that will be involved are inviting death.

"The punishment of committing treason is death. The swearing-in of any person not declared by IEBC, and who did not win the election, is unacceptable," Githu said.
