Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has opened up on how he once celebrated his Christmas while behind the bars.

Speaking on Christmas eve when he hosted children from across Nairobi County at City Hall, Sonko briefly narrated his time in prison and painted the positive side of Kenyans spending their time in detention.

“Prison Christmas celebrations still lingers in my mind. I had friends who used to visit me while I was in prison, not because of my family background but because they were generous,” said Sonko.

“We used to share what we got amongst all of us regardless of tribe, religion or clan,” said Mr Sonko.

Recently, Sonko confirmed he had been jailed at Shimo La Tewa in Mombasa prison in 1998 after a land transfer deal he was involved in went soar.

“I am an orphan. When I go down on my knees I pray for every Kenyan. We should share with whatever we have,” he said on Sunday.

“I love helping the poor . That’s what keeps me where I am.” he added.
