Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has kick started a city beautification program aimed at placing the city at par with other renowned cities in the world.

The beautification plan will involve planting of flowers and grass along the roads and pavements within the city's Central Business District.

Speaking during an impromptu tour around Nairobi City Centre on Thursday night, Governor Sonko said his administration is keen to give city a facelift that will "restore its lost glory."

"Nairobi is a commercial hub. We need to invest on transforming it to continue attracting more tourists and investors."

Sonko, who was flanked by Nairobi Environment CEC Mahmoud Dagane, ordered that metal bars be erected along the pavements to curb accidents along the streets.

This comes only days after Nairobi was ranked among top most dynamic cities in the continent in a new global rating.

JLL 2017 City Momentum Index (CMI) released on Friday rated Nairobi the third best city in Africa and beat other major cities across the world such as Dubai (United Arab Emirates), New York (US), Paris (France) and Stockholm (Sweden).

Major factors used to rank the cities are innovation and technology, environment and Housing. Bangalore (India), Hon Chi Minh(Vietnam), Silicon Valley( US), Shanghai( China) and Hyderabad( India) were the top five best cities in the world.
