NASA Threatens to Call for Countrywide Protests

John Wanjohi Feb 10, 2018

National Super Alliance (Nasa) has now threatened to call for countrywide protests if the Jubilee government refuses to engage it in dialogue.

The coalition said its principals will hold meetings next week to discuss among other issues, resumption of nationwide demonstrations to push the ruling party into talks.

Also in the agenda will be plans for ‘swearing-in’ of Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka as deputy people's president.

In separate interviews with the Standard, Nasa leader Raila Odinga and co-principals Musalia Mudavadi and Kalonzo Musyoka said only dialogue will save the country from plunging to anarchy.

“Everyone knows the country is in crisis. Everywhere we go, people are ready and willing to take up arms and fight for what they think is right,” said Raila.

“If no dialogue is held, we will soon go down the path of anarchy.”

Kalonzo said: “Uhuru and Ruto are driving the country down the road of destruction, they only seem to listen to themselves. That is why we are considering the demonstrations to let them know that Kenyans are not happy."

Raila cautioned President Kenyatta's administration against disrespecting the law, stating that doing so will push Kenyans to taking the same route.

“If the government does not respect the law, then the people are under no obligation to do so,” said Raila.

On Thursday, Nasa people’s assembly organising committee said the coalition will push for a fresh presidential election be conducted before August this year.

“We want to ensure the process of forming the people’s assemblies culminates in a presidential election no later than August 2018,” said Chairman David Ndii.
