US Denies Meddling in Kenya's Political Affairs

John Wanjohi Feb 21, 2018

The United States has responded to claims by National Super Alliance (Nasa) that it is interfering with Kenya's internal political affairs.

Speaking in Kabarnet, Baringo county on Wednesday, US Ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec dismissed the claims by the Kenyan opposition, stating that US is only interested in the country's development.

“The US is absolutely committed to working with the government in dealing with these problems and to continue to build the country,” said Godec.

“We have no reason to meddle with Kenyan politics. Our mission here is to partner with this country to spur development, nothing else,” said Godec.

He said America is focused on addressing issues such as corruption, which has been a cancer in the country's development agenda.

“Corruption is another impediment to development in this country. It must be put to a stop for Kenyans to receive services,” he added.

He pointed out that US has financed some key development programs in the health, agriculture and security sectors.

Last week, a section of opposition supporters staged a protest outside US embassy in Gigiri, Nairobi to demand for the resignation of Godec.

Nasa has been accusing Godec of being “partisan” and siding with the government on several issues, especially ones surrounding presidential elections.
