Kenyans Must Protect Country's Fragile Democracy, US Ambassador Robert Godec Says

John Wanjohi Feb 24, 2018

US ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec says that the county's democracy is precious but fragile, and every Kenyan has a duty to defend it.

"It’s important now that everyone works to support and defend Kenya’s democracy and fundamental rights," he noted.

In his address to Generation Kenya youths on Friday evening, the United States envoy told the youths that they have a big role to play for development of Kenya and the world.

"Work to understand your own concerns, but also those of all your fellow citizens. Find ways to protect your Constitution and move your country forward to an ever better, ever more democratic and free, future," he advised the young men and women.

"While you work to build a more prosperous future for yourselves, your families and your communities, I urge you to work hard to preserve the rights and freedoms of all Kenyans as well."

Generation Kenya is a youth employment project by the United States that aims at helping more than 80,000 young Kenyans get productive jobs by 2020.

Godec further noted that political ambition has put to test the county's democracy in the past few months, and leaders and citizens must rise in its support.

"It is important now that everyone - leaders and citizens - work to support and defend Kenya’s democracy and fundamental rights."
