Deputy President William Ruto Mocks Raila over January 30th "Swearing-in" as People's President

Deputy President William Ruto has mocked National Super Alliance (Nasa) leader Raila Odinga over his January 30th "swearing in" as people's president, terming the oath as a waste of time.

Speaking when he attended a fundraiser at Namwela Boys High School in Sirisia, Bungoma County on Saturday, the DP said the mock swearing-in of Odinga was a political theatric aimed at derailing the government from its path.

“How do you get sworn in as the President and you go back to your wife yet you say you are the President? What kind of theatrics are those?” he posed.

Ruto, however, noted that the government was not interested in showdown with the opposition, because its only focus was uniting Kenyans and rolling out development.

“Our aim is to unite all Kenyans and get rid of divisive politics. We do not want to talk about what this and that tribe are getting. We want to talk about which road should be built and which areas should be elected to electricity,” he said.

Speakers at the event echoed the Deputy President's call for all leaders to focus on unity and delivering services to Kenyans.

“It is time to work. Before I became Water Cabinet Secretary and now Devolution, I was minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs and I can tell you there will be no other General Election until August 2022,” Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa said.

Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka said President Kenyatta's government will serve all Kenyans equally without discrimination.

“These are good people. They did not leave me out after I failed. They gave me another powerful office. These offices are not just for us to sit in but we should use them to help our people,” the Speaker said.
