Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka Declines to Reverse Removal of Wetang'ula as Minority Leader

Senate Speaker Kenneth Lusaka on Tuesday dismissed a letter from National Super Alliance (Nasa) Chief Executive Officer Norman Magaya, seeking to retain Bungoma senator Moses Wetang'ula as Minority Leader.

In his ruling, Lusaka noted that Magaya's letter was not submitted through the Minority Chief Whip's office as required.

In the letter, Magaya had asked Lusaka not to approve the removal of Wetang'ula from the seat, citing authority by Nasa Summit, which comprises of principals Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi and Wetang'ula.

“I have instructions from the National Super Alliance Summit comprising the NASA principals to inform you that Senator Moses Wetangula remains the duly nominated leader of minority in the Senate by NASA.”

The Speaker's ruling effectively confirmed Siaya Senator James Orengo as the new replacement for ousted Wetang'ula.

The Ford Kenya leader was voted out following a Nasa Senate Parliamentary Group meeting on Tuesday morning at the Senate Lounge. 19 senators endorsed Orengo as their new leader in the Senate.
