Man Contracts 'World Worst' Super-Gonorrhea

John Wanjohi Mar 30, 2018

Medics in the United Kingdom say that a man contracted what they described as the world's "worst-ever" case of super-gonorrhoea.

He reportedly had a regular partner in the UK, but caught the disease after an intercourse with a woman in South East Asia.

Public Health England said it is the first case that the infection can't be cured with first choice antibiotics. The doctors said they are trying to find any other sexual partners of the man, who has not been identified, in an bid to contain the sexually transmitted infection.

The first antibiotic medication, which is made up of a combination of azithromycin and ceftriaxone has failed to work.

"This is the first time a case has displayed such high-level resistance to both of these drugs and to most other commonly used antibiotics."Dr Gwenda Hughes, from Public Health England, said.

World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Centres for Disease Control have agreed that this is a world first. The disease is caused by the bacterium called Neisseria gonorrhoeae and is spread through unprotected vaginal, oral and anal sex.

Hughes added: "We are following up this case to ensure that the infection was effectively treated with other options and the risk of any onward transmission is minimised."
