Kenyans Online Attack UK High Commissioner Nic Hailey after His Comment about Outgoing US Ambassador Godec
United Kingdom High Commissioner to Kenya Nic Hailey on Thursday found himself in hot soup after Kenyans on social media launched attacks on him following a comment he made about the outgoing United States ambassador Robert Godec.
Hailey's comment came after news that US President Donald Trump had replaced long-serving Godec with Illinois State Senator Kyle McCarter as Washington's top envoy to Kenya.
In a tweet, the British diplomat bid a farewell to Godec, noting that he will be missed greatly.
"Trolls gonna troll, haters gonna hate. But no one who has met my fellow envoy Bob Godec could question his deep and untiring commitment to Kenya, the Kenyan people and the values and institutions that make Kenya strong. He will be missed," Hailey tweeted.
However, his message was not received well by Kenyans, who stormed his page to express their anger. Here are some of the comments by online users:
Kibra MP @okothkenneth said: "Hehehe, Balozi you're trolling and hating, SAD! ... Apparently the new Ambassador is fluent in Swahili and has vast experience in negotiating with "native tribal chiefs" ... you'll get along just fine. #TribalChief ."
ODM Director of Communications @EtalePhilip noted:"Your tweet fails every standard of DIPLOMACY. It is undiplomatic and a mockery to us.'
@AsedagAseda tweeted: "Your first sentence sounds like a Kenya government official talking. Careless."
@gordon_oyugi said: I initially thought @OleItumbi tweeted for him."
@edowino noted: "We all understand that the quality of diplomats has deteriorated over the past few years. You have nothing on Sir Jeffrey James & Sir Edward Clay and neither does Bob have anything on Smith Hempstone & Prudence Bushnell. You're both cut off the same mediocre cloth."
@Kimjobil said: "I think the influence of USA and Britain has reduced drastically. Its not the quality of diplomats in question, is the ability of these states to push for their interests and other ideologies that has drastically reduced."
@ernai noted:"Nic, when you stay in a foreign country and you find that your opinion contradicts that of most of its citizens, it's time to assess yourself, and start real learning. It will help you in future. Start listening. @BobGodec was a big BIG FAILURE at the most crucial hour."
@KhakaliP commented: "More than 70% of Kenyans are happy for the end of @BobGodec reign in Kenya. Thank you @realDonaldTrump."
