Outrage as Parking Fees at JKIA are Hiked
Parking fees for motorists dropping and picking up travellers at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) have been reviewed upwards, a move that has sparked outrage from Kenyans.
The airport, through its parking service provider Kenya Airports Parking Services announced new parking fees for those parking for a maximum of 2 hours.
In the revised charges, motorists parking for 20 minutes or less will part with Sh100, those parking for between 20 and 40 minutes will be charged Sh250, while ones parking for between 40 minutes and one hour will part with Sh350.
Those parking for between one and two hours will be charged Sh500. KAPS announced that any motorist who spends more than 2 hours in the parking zone will be penalized.
However, the move has angered Kenyans who took to the social media to express their disappointment with the new charges.
@ConsumersKenya tweeted: " Norwegian jungle law? Instead of unrealistic, irrational and exploitative parking fees, just ban parking at the JKIA. Norwegian MD at @KenyaAirports and @TransportKE CS @JamesMacharia_ have crossed the red line of fairness >> It will now cost you Sh500 an hour for parking at JKIA."
@Emma999Too said:"Anyone who travels in & out of JKIA needs to speak out! This is daylight robbery by KAPS & KAA! How do you charge parking fees 0-60 min when the traffic inside the airport is a nightmare! This is clearly aimed at forcing travelers to use airport expensive yellow cabs.#Impunity."
"Indeed everything is getting hotter by the hour, we can't predict future of businesses anymore.I hope they will realise it before it messes more on the economy which already is in a dark hole," another user noted.
David M Wanjohi said:"We all know who owns kaps !! We all know kaps has never been subjected to competitive bidding and we all know kaps takes 75% of the money and KAA is only left with 25%.We are a shithole country."
Jessie Mailutha noted:" This pissed me off! Three weeks ago my flight was delayed by one hour. My family had to wait longer at JKIA and ended up paying Ksh 500 darn!"
