Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Says He May Join the Opposition
Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko says he could join the opposition during the 2022 general elections.
Sonko reiterated his earlier stand that he will not defend the Nairobi governorship seat in the next polls.
However, Sonko stated that the fact that he will not seek reelection should not be misunderstood that he will go for a higher seat, noting that he could become the Opposition leader or a Member of County Assembly (MCA).
“Saying that I want to be a one term governor does not mean that I want to be deputy president or the president. Let me do my work and let it speak for me and only God knows what the future holds,” Sonko said on Wednesday.
He said he's contemplating becoming the Opposition leader or even running for an MCA seat - the two political seats he has never held since joining politics in 2011.
"It is not only being DP that is out there. I can also be MCA or leader of the Opposition. These are positions I have never held. It is just politics,” Sonko stated.
He spoke amid reports of strained relationship with powerful government officials including Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho, who he accused of threatening him over his choice for new Nairobi Deputy Governor.
