Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko to Fly Out 300 Hawkers, Boda-Boda Operators for a Bench-marking Tour Abroad
The Nairobi County Government has announced plans to fly out 300 hawkers, boda boda and matatu operators to Rwanda for a bench marking tour on how to manage their operations in an orderly manner.
Speaking to the press on Thursday, the Director of City Inspectorate Peter Mbaya said the tour is part of Governor Mike Sonko's plan to restore sanity within the city.
“There are plans to take 300 small scale traders. Boda boda and matatu operators to Rwanda for bench marking, and to appreciate that there are better ways of managing their businesses and in a civil manner,” said the Director of City Inspectorate.
There has been serious concerns over insecurity and disorderliness within the central business district following an influx of hawkers into the city centre leading to increased human traffic.
Fingers have also been pointed at the public service vehicles and boda boda operators over their disorderly way of operations. They have also been accused of flouting traffic rules with some of them being used by gangsters to flee after committing criminal activities.
The Nairobi county government has constantly found itself at loggerheads with, hawkers, boda boda and matatu operations in its bid to restrict their operations especially within the city centre.
Rwanda's capital city, Kigali has been touted as the one of cleanest and most organized cities in the continent and beyond.
