Five People Killed in Murang'a Landslide Following Heavy Rainfall
Five people have been confirmed dead while several others sustained injuries after a landslide swept away parts of Murarandia in Murang'a County.
The landslide was witnessed after heavy rainfalls in the area and other regions of the country. Speaking to the press on Saturday, Murang'a county communications director Mwangi Macharia said about 25 families were affected by the landslide.
"Our disaster management team is on the ground offering help to those affected. We are offering them food, access to health facilities and clothing at the moment."
"Rescue plans are ongoing and we have moved the affected families to safer zones. The landslide mostly affected Inoi village but we have the situation under control," he remarked.
Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria has called on those living close to the rivers and landslide-prone areas to move to higher grounds. He further announced suspension of activities around quarries to avoid loss of lives.
The landslide stretched for over a kilometre and carried away a tea farm where the five were residing.
