Kenyan Gov't Asked to Purchase Flight Ticket for Miguna Miguna for His Return to Kenya Next Week

John Wanjohi May 09, 2018

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) has asked the government to buy a flight ticket for self-declared National Resistance Movement (NRM) general Miguna Miguna ahead of his return to Kenya next week.

The national rights watchdog further wants the government to issue the deported lawyer with a valid Kenyan passport to facilitate his comeback to the country.

In a letter to the Immigration Department,  KNCHR chairlady Kagwiria Mbogori also wants the government to allow the agency to facilitate Miguna's return.

“Miguna has informed the commission that he will return to Kenya on May 16, 2018,” said Ms Mbogori in the letter dated May 5th.

“To enable the commission comply with the court directive, the commission urges your office to comply with the orders by issuing Miguna Miguna with a valid Kenyan passport, purchasing a flight ticket for Miguna from Toronto, Canada, to Nairobi.”

Mbogori wants the Department of Immigration to respond to the two-page letter before Thursday, May 10th.

In a tweet last week, Miguna said he will be returning to Kenya on May 16th. "I am returning to Kenya on May 16, 2018. I am a Kenyan citizen by birth. The High Court has ordered @FredMatiangi, @GKihalangwa, @JBoinnet and KInoti 13 times to issue me with a valid Kenyan passport and facilitate my return to Kenya as a Kenyan unconditionally," Miguna said in a tweet.

Miguna was first deported to Canada on February 6th over his role in the mock swearing in of Opposition leader Raila Odinga as people's president on January 30th.

He returned to Kenya on March 26th after the court directed he be allowed back. He was however, denied entry into the country and spend two nights in custody at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

The firebrand lawyer was denied entry to the country by Immigration authorities after reportedly refusing to comply with clearance procedures at the Nairobi airport. He was flown to Dubai - his last port of departure - where he spent a few days before returning to Canada.
