Sort Your Citizenship First, Nairobi Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi Tells Miguna Miguna

John Wanjohi May 17, 2018

Miguna Miguna's nomination as Nairobi Deputy Governor hangs in the balance after Speaker Beatrice Elachi indicated that the Nairobi County Assembly would not vet him until he settles his citizenship issues with the government.

Speaking during an interview with Hot96 FM's Jeff and Jalas breakfast show on Thursday, Elachi said Miguna will not have it easy unless he first sorts out issues with his citizenship.

"He (Miguna) should let the authorities give a clear position on his citizenship. As for now, we know Miguna is Canadian. So, he should not hurry to jump on the plane," Ms Elachi further stated.

"The governor has done what the law allows him. We shall follow the law as we are the ones who make the laws," she added.

Sonko nominated Miguna in a letter to Speaker Elachi on Wednesday. In the letter, Sonko said he had picked the self-declared National Resistance Movement (NRM) general for the position, saying he is the right man for the job.

“I hereby forward my nominee, Lawyer Miguna Miguna to undergo full vetting process and approval by the County Assembly for the position of Deputy Governor,” reads part of the letter.

“The nominee meets all the requirements provided for in the Constitution, the Leadership and Integrity Act, the Elections Act and County Government Act.”
