Governor Mike Sonko Flees Nairobi after 'Assassination' Threats
Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko says he has been forced to temporarily flee Nairobi after fearing for his life.
The Governor said he has retreated to his Mua Hills home in Machakos, where he feels 'a bit safe' after learning that there is an attempt on his life.
Speaking to a local media on Friday, Sonko noted that trouble started after he called Nairobi police boss to inform him of a person who had threatened to assassinate him.
"My troubles started when I called Nairobi police boss Mr Kamwende and told him I want to write a statement against this one man who has threatened to eliminate me," Sonko said.
"I have to cut down on my movements. This is a serious threat to my life because of this one man and his cartels," the governor added.
The Governor said he's being fought by cartels over his fight against corruption at the City Hall. On Thursday, Sonko said he nominated self-proclaimed National Resistance Movement (NRM) to help him flush out the cartels from the system.
"I settled on Miguna Miguna so that he can help me in fighting the cartels. I know that Miguna is the number one ‘anti-cartel’ ,” said Sonko.
