Revealed: How NYS Paid Sh100,000 for Each Piece of Towel and Sh1 Million for One Car Tyre
Shocking details of how billion of shillings disappeared from the National Youth Service (NYS) in the fresh Sh9 billion scandal have been revealed.
People Daily reports that suppliers walked away with million of shillings in exaggerated prices for items supplied to the youth agency.
One of the firm under investigation was found to have supplied 200 pieces of towels, pocketing Sh100,000 for each piece. This is a rather ridiculous price considering that one piece in the local market could go for about Sh1,500 in the upwards.
Statements recorded with the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) on Wednesday further revealed that another firm was paid Sh100 million for supplying 100 car tyres. This translates to each tyre being secured at around Sh1 Million.
Another firm that erected tents for the NYS personnel also said it was paid Sh180 million in two rounds of Sh90 million each.
Additionally, another firm that delivered spare parts of grading machines was paid Sh200 million, while another company that supplied mosquito nets took home Sh100 million.
In the looting spree that reportedly lasted for three months, another firm banked Sh40 million for supplying 3,000 pieces of blankets, translating to Sh13,000 per piece.
Further details obtained by the detectives revealed that several other nonexistent firms were paid millions for supplying nothing while others received exorbitant amounts for supplying a few products.
One of the suspects questioned by detectives said a friend who works at NYS lured him into opening a bank account where Sh60 million was wired into, without any prior explanation for service delivery.
Other reports indicate that some officials withdrew as much as Sh200 million over the counter from a local bank, an act which contravenes Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) restrictions.
