Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has reacted to the rejection of his nominee for Deputy  Governor position by the County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi.

In a statement, Sonko said he had accepted the decision by the County Assembly to reject the nomination of deported lawyer Miguna Miguna to the position.

On Tuesday, Speaker Elachi said the Assembly had rejected the nomination on the basis that Miguna was a dual citizenship holder, who is not allowed to take any state office by the constitution.

"Under Standing Order 1 of the House, the name of the nominee be referred back to the appointing authority for further validation," Elachi said.

Sonko said he will soon nominate another candidate and present the name to the County Assembly for vetting and approval.

"I hereby wish to accept the decision of the Nairobi County Assembly rejecting the nomination of Dr Miguna Miguna as Nairobi Deputy Governor on the basis that he is a dual citizen as provided for under Article 78 of the Constitution."

"I'm committed to respect the decisions of the Nairobi County Assembly without reservations because they represent the sovereignty and infallible will of the Great People of Nairobi County. I shall present another qualified nominee to the County Assembly after due consultations to ensure Nairobi County gets a befitting Deputy Governor to support in service delivery," Sonko said.

The flamboyant governor further assured Nairobi residents that he remains committed to delivering services to them.

“The Nairobi County Government is working round the clock to take advantage of the pockets of favourable weather that we are currently experiencing to overhaul the roads and other infrastructure which were destroyed by the rains,” he stated.
