DP William Ruto Reacts to 'Hatuna Deni ya Mtu' Viral Song, Rift Valley Leaders Outraged [AUDIO]
Deputy President William Ruto and a section of leaders from the Rift Valley have reacted to a recently released vernacular song, saying that Mt Kenya voters have no obligation to vote for a particular presidential candidate in the 2022 elections.
The Kikuyu song titled, Hatuna deni ya mtu’ (which loosely translates to ‘we are in nobody’s debt’), has since gone viral on social media.
The song appears to be targeted at Deputy President William Ruto, who allegedly entered into a pact with President Uhuru in 2013 that he will back his candidature once he completes two terms in 2017.
It says the Central Kenya region has no debt to pay to Ruto as he seeks to inherit the Presidency from President Kenyatta in 2022, sparking uproar from leaders allied to Ruto.
“These songs you’re hearing… these handshakes you see…we want to assure you that, as leaders from the Rift Valley, we are behind William Ruto and we will not allow anybody to disrespect our leader and the journey he began long ago,” said Nominated MP Gideon Keter on Sunday.
Keiyo South MP Daniel Rono stated that: “The issue of singing to us about debts…we will not be shaken by that. We went round in 2013 and 2017, brought votes and Ruto and Uhuru went to State House. That is the same way we will go round in 2022.”
Jubilee party succession plan reportedly stated that Ruto supports President Kenyatta for the first ten years, after which Kenyatta would return the favor by supporting him to rule for 10 years from 2022.
Addressing worshippers at the All Saints Cathedral in Nairobi on Sunday, DP Ruto also appeared to respond to the song by stating that nobody owed any community or individual, including himself, anything.
“I want to remind leaders what Paul says in Romans 13:8; owe no man nothing except the debt of love for one another,” he said.
“That is the debt that all of us have, to love one another; no person, no community, no section of Kenya, owes anybody – including myself – anything.”
